Day 6

Subject: Yeah I know, [firstname], life's stressful.

Hi [firtname],

One crucial element to supercharging your body is to reduce stress.

Here's the science part…

Stress is caused by our suppressing the body's “fight or flight” mechanism. This harks back to our neolithic ancestors. Back then, if you were confronted by a woolly mammoth or a saber-toothed tiger, you'd either run away from it, or fight it so you could kill it and eat it – before it killed and ate you!

Nowadays you're not likely to see a woolly mammoth or a saber-toothed tiger but that “fight or flight” mechanism from your inner caveman or cavewoman is still there. In modern life it's more likely to become activated if you're driving down the freeway in heavy traffic or being shouted at by a bullying boss.

One way to reduce stress is to meditate.

The simplest type of meditation (and best, in my view) is Mindfulness. Mindfulness is very easy to do. Just clear your mind and concentrate on your breathing. Don't try to block out thoughts; instead, let them drift by like clouds in the sky. You'll find this has a very calming effect.

If you find yourself constantly stressed, look at what's causing it. If freeway traffic is the culprit, try taking the bus or subway, or finding a back route. It might take longer, but at least you'll reach your destination with your nerves intact. If your boss keeps giving you grief, start looking for another job.

Finally, don't rely on external forces to reduce stress. Smoking, drinking and taking drugs are never the solution. Sometimes your doctor may prescribe anti-anxiety medication, but take this for as short a time as possible. Don't let it become a “crutch”. Likewise, drowning your troubles in booze might make you forget them for a while, but they'll still be there when you sober up. Smoking will lead to greater health issues and even more stress, so quit today.

Warmly,

[Your Name]
